I practice Krav Maga and have been for several years. It is becoming very popular with some of the guys from 5th group. My instructor is retired from 5th group, I have gotten good enough to teach with him.

I am thinking about picking up Sambo (Not sure if I'm spelling it right).

Also check out Paul Vunak. He has pedigree from Bruce Lee & Jeet Kun Do, but is known for training Seal 6. I have worked with his guys. I would give them full respect for real world deadliness.

I have studied Shotokan and Tae Kwon Do. IMHO they all help, and all are useful. Being aware, and confident that you will not be a victim can give you an advantage. I would like to have more weapons training, particularly with a staff. That seems like the most innocent of weapons, but can be highly effective.

Krav Maga is Israeli. Seems to be a favorite of today's Mixed Martial Artists.

I've been at loads of different martial arts through the years. Started out at Karate at 7 (26 now) and moved my way through BJJ, Aikido and through MMA. Now I just roll with a couple of guys when I get the chance but nothing serious. I disagree largely about the idea of "good martial arts". All martial arts are equally useless if not in the right setting. Martial arts won't do you (much) good in a mine field, for example. To say that stick fighting is better than MMA is true in some ways, but if you loose your stick, you're out of luck. I like to be able to rely on my own body without extensions. Agains a good stick fighter, I would probably get hurt but he requires a stick. I require my body and I never loose that

I didn't say stick fighting better than mma, I have done both. What I was trying (and apparently failed) to express is how vital timing and distance control are no matter what art you practice. Yes, stick fighting teaches timing and distance, but so does boxing to a large degree.

A fighter who understands range, timing, and distance can "choose the battle ground". I notice that fencing folks like kendo practitioners have wonderful control of spacing.

The example I love is Lyoto Machida. He controls distance soooo well, and the big thing other fighters hate about him is how little damage he takes. That was what I was referencing, not that stick is superior to mma. Sorry for the lame way I tried to express it.
