It is true that many modern facilities are electronic, but everyone is backed up with manual controls, or also known as keys and breaker bars.

That may be true, but your talking about a handfull of guards controlling hundreds or maybe even thousands of inmates. There will be no video cameras working or anything powered by electricity.

My thinking on this issue is this...

If national collapse occurs that directly affects the ability to adequately continue to incarcerate convicted criminals, those on death row should be executed, even if it requires guards to walk down the cell block and put a bullet in each one. Same for violent criminals convicted for rape, murder, kidnap, armed robbery and similar offenses. Personally, I would do the same for violent sexual offenders.

Non-violent criminals would be released, except for illegals, who would immediately be removed from the country under penalty of death should they ever return.

Thats just my thoughts on the matter.

I would like to add: I would be in favor of it being incorporated into law that a criminal at large could be declared as an "Outlaw" within agreed to parameters where it would be responsibility of any citizen to shoot them that are so designated on sight.

We are about 30 miles in either direction from both jails. but how do you find out how many inmates are in them? Never thought about these things before and is something that is good to know. I would like to thank that none of them would be released, but you never know in these situations.

If you know the names of the jails, Google them, and you can at least find out the number of inmates they were designed to hold if not their current number. Try also residential mental institutions, work release center, correctional institutions, juvenile facilities and the name of your state. For example California + prisons. My state calls places where people are incarcerated by all of the terms I mentioned.

Thanks davisontp for the info. It's a good thing to be thinking about in our prep planning. I never actually stopped to calculate how close I am to the nearest prison and how many prisoners it contains. It's smart to do that. I will say this - it makes me glad I got my pistol permit.

Jez...you are my hero! The sheeple would have a fit to even hear this but it is my firm belief that if and when the SHTF there should be standing orders for all prisoners with a certain classification to be executed. We have enough people who are wasting our air with every breath they take without continuing the life of those we know for sure will be more trouble then they are worth. The families of the majority of the guards live somewhere in the area. Do those guards want their families exposed to the absolute danger these waste products would come up with? Hell no! In the most drastic of situations........what guard or other on duty person is likely to not take off, go home and protect their loved ones. Clean up the mess in a hurry and go home. I like Texas.........express lane to the executioner. We should be able to concentrate on providing water, food and shelter without having to worry extra about the sheeple being concerned about these convicted felons consitutional rights. Bullcrap!

This is a real tough one folks. Recently, Middle Tn had some massive flooding. 2 prisons were severly affected. One had some evacuations going on. Housing units had to be rebuilt.

Another prison on higher ground next to the river, the roads in and out were washed out. Staff had to work 40 hr shifts cause no one could get in or out. The preps for this event was minimal causing unnecessary hardship on the staff. A prison stocks only so much balony and very few MREs.

There are some prison folks on my home forum. I can tell you, some staff have contingencys to save the public. Due to the severity of these contingencys, they may not be fully implimented, but some of us are thinking! We must not forget the legal ramifications of out decisions when order has been restored.

If your job is public service and you quit or stay home, it may be an illegal action. Something to consider.

The average officer is not able to deal with such scenarios, relying on senior staff and administrative officials to tell them what to do. And who will show up for work? Snow is SHTF for us!

The National Guard may never show up. A scenaio may be to let the convicts have the prison, and set up a perimeter to shoot anyone who leaves.

I hear this crap about survival weapons all the time. Your survival weapon must shoot people! Its not only about little tree rats to eat! I've read and heard from 2 different folks about their survival when the Argentina collasped and the Balkans also. Think war in the streets and countryside.

The electronics in prisons was mentioned. This is a real SHTF prison scenario that happens way too often on a normal day. Some contingencys have been implimented after too much staff blood is shed. I wouldn't worry about the front doors being left open, we have the entrances covered.

Still, I wouldn't worry too much about living too close to a prison. People have asked me this question before. If we don't shoot em, we know you will!

The threat of a prisoner release in the event of a disaster is very real, and well covered in the book "Rohan Nation: Reinventing America after the 2020 Collapse." Won't ruin the book for you (its a great Tom Clancy like thriller, but based on very realistic survival situation), but in this book there is a bioengineered viral pandemic that spreads rapidly--and remote prisons with their more cutoff inmates and guard force are actually relatively safe from getting the virus. But with the virus spreading, guards cease coming to work and whether intentionally released or not, the inmates get out. They form a gang and become the worst marauding force in the area. Anyway, if you want both a great read and lots of fantastic information on how to prepare for surviving disasters like this, read the book.
