Thanks, Dale. I don't hear them very often, which makes me think they might have a large territory they move through.

Not the answer for everyone, but I have wolf hybrids and when the coyotes start yippin, my dogs start howlin and the yotes shut up. We have chickens and haven't lost one yet. Neighbors down the road about 1/2 mile kill about 30 - 40 a year, we never see any, just hear them a long way off.

Worth a try. Coyotes are terrified of wolves, with good reason. I know wolf urine will send them in the opposite direction. Let us know how it goes.

The coydogs in Maine are pretty darn good size and don't seem to be afraid of much of anything. There have been a few reports of hunters being surrounded by a pack and having to shoot a few before the rest ran off. Bodies to prove story in the newspaper. I'm sure they must be around here in NH somewhere but haven't seen nor heard anything of them yet.

It's expected that within the next 5-10 years the NE will begin to have a population of eastern timberwolves migrating south from Canada. They have already been found in Maine by the USFWS. Severe, extreme cold winters are speeding up this process as well as fewer hunters and more deer/beaver. This subspecies is not as large as there western and northern cousins but people will start to realize a drop in the local coyote and coydog populations as they move in as well as an increase in there red fox and small game populations. Just an FYI.

Ah yes Dale its nice to hear that the powers that be are finally starting to tell some truths. Now if they would only admit to there being mountain lions in the NE it would be refreshing. Not all that long ago I watched two of them playing at the crest of a hill in the moonlight. But I was the crazy one that no one believed. Hmmmm edible? lol

    mtnlioness,

Cougars are in way more places than the powers that be will ever admit to. Not to mention many other wildlife related issues. There is a reason some states have species that arn't supposed to live in them listed as endangered.

As for edible......mtn lion is delicious. Taste alot like veal and I've had mtn lion parmesan. It was great.

As far as telling the truth about the NE wolves. They were forced into it when a state tried to convict a hunter for killing a wolf but it wasn't listed as a state and/or federal endangered or threatened species and they had to drop the suit or admit they had "dropped the ball". Wildlife biology has very little to do with the threatened and endangered species act or listings. It's all political. ie. western wolves, african elephants, leopards and on and on.

We have a similar problem. Dep't of Natural Resources denied the existence of mountain lions for years. Not sure if they still do. Their excuse is they don't want to alarm the public. They are here no doubt.
