Default Vast volcanic 'raft' found in Pacific, near New Zealand

A BBC report states: Vast volcanic 'raft' found in Pacific, near New Zealand dated: 10 Aug 2012 written by: AFP news agency

"...A vast "raft" of volcanic rocks covering 10,000 sq miles (26,000 sq km) of ocean has been spotted by a New Zealand military aircraft.

A naval ship was forced to change course in order to avoid the cluster of buoyant rocks, located 1,000 miles off the New Zealand coast.

The unusual phenomenon was probably the result of pumice being released from an underwater volcano, experts said..".

When was the last time you seen or heard of a floating raft of rocks over 10,000 square miles in size?

Does anyone have any idea of what trouble this will cause for the ocean, people, or wildlife in that area?

I haven't ever heard of that before. I'd be interested, too, in hearing about repercussions.

Well today Fox news had it on their 80 seconds around the world. Thank goodness it is so far out to sea and away from any human contact. I have not heard anything about what can and will happen to this raft since it cannot sink.

It would be cool to see some pictures of it....

I don't know why they call it a raft, looks more like pollution.

You see the white stuff in the photo? That is the rocks in his hand also photo above. It is because the rocks are light colored that they appear like the top of a wave. Would you like to go swimming in that?

Anyone know how long it takes pumice to become waterlogged and sink? Does it sink? If not, could it be artiffically contained, (rafted) and used for a floating human habitation? Read on one of the reports that this stuff is floating as much as 3 feet out of the water, must be deep. Biologically, within a short (months) amount of time this thing will attract all sorts of marine life (fish & plants). Some form of marine farm? Quite the BOL.

Im from new Zealand and this happened out near our Kermadec Islands which are currently active, we have also 3 other volcanoes that are active at the moment and have been having earthquake flurries through out the north Isand. For updated information on our volcanic activity you can cheeck out geonet.co.nz they have alert bulletins everyday at the moment. The website hasnt updated their volcanoe status on the main page but White Island stands at 2 and Tongariro stands at 2 as well with imminent eruption.
