I saw on the news the other night about them finding a 14 foot snake in the Everglades. My father in law used to use pigs to control snakes back in the day…May-be they should let a bunch of feral hogs loose in the Everglades to control the snakes. (or may-be Mongoose)

Don't know if they have gotten into the Everglades, but I know Florida has a huge problem.

Johnnie l does your daughter hunt hogs in Missouri or Arkansas? I have not heard of any problems here, but I am closer to the city.

A major problem is these are one of the smartest animals in the world. If you remove them from one area others will just move in. The state park system down here in Florida is starting hunts on most weekends at night when the state parks are empty of people.

I have found with the speed of these pigs even at 350 pounds, requires a second round even if you can get within 100 yards for the first shot. I use either a 7mm bolt action or my trusty .30-.30 lever action that really gives me that second shot fast.

Down here you can hunt with dogs and bows crossbows, rifles, pistol, knives, you can use black-powder min .50 cal, or shotguns with sabot rounds to give you the range you need. So you can use the the full spectrum of weapons down here in Florida.

Happy Hunting because we have a wild pig and big snake problem also. They just killed one over 17 foot long on a road down south of Disney World.

I nearly hit one, driving the other day on Benning. I lived in Texas for a year, prior to moving here. They were all over the place. You could also find their carcasses all over too. Hunters don't even take them.

I have what I would consider a very good, if not perfect, rifle for hogs. Its a Ruger Scout rifle in .308. Short, light, fed with a removable box magazine, with a 2.75X scope. Maybe I'll get a chance to use it on a hog if they continue spreading north, which seems likely.

Speaking of those snakes... I watched a program several months ago that researched how far north pythons could possibly spread with consideration of temperatures. Theoretically, they can survive all the way up the east coast to coastal Virginia!

    Sorry Chef,

Both are really bad ideas. Hogs are distructive but mongoose make hogs look like angels on the ecosystem. For proof, just visit Hawaii and look for most of the birds that flourished there 50 years ago. There either extinct or endangered, due to the mongoose. They made a great pet to control cockroaches, but are hell on an ecosystem.

We have wild hogs in central Alabama, not as many as in south Alabama. Like coyotes, they are on the increase. No closed season on either. I have never hunted hog, have always heard on the back strap was good to eat. From some of the previous post, sounds like maybe I didn't hear correctly.

Scouter you heard correctly. The tenderloin is the most .... well.... tender.
But dont discout the rest. Especially a small hog will give two nice front shoulders and two nice hams. Never been a "brains" or headcheeze eater, so thats about all I take.

Ha ha! the meat SUCKS! but... If you don't have any, well....

Serious, I'd make sausage, heavily spiced out of it. Maybe take the hams and cure them.

    Buggy,
What are your pigs primarily eating? Diet actually makes a big difference in flavor for wild hogs. Wild hogs here in WV are quite good in heavy mast years (mostly acorns) and the wild pigs I ate from HI were pretty tasty too.
