    In my lifetime I have been shot, stabbed and beaten in the service of my country. I have witnessed men, women and children murdered, raped and worse in foreign lands while being ordered to stand down by my government. As long as I draw a breath and can I will never endure these or let my family endure these ever again.

    [QUOTE=Morgan101;83543]

    There are only two ways to convince a person to do something. You can reason with them, or you can force them. Carrying a firearm is the great equalizer against force. It allows a 70 year old, 110 lb. woman to be on equal footing with a 20 year old, 220 lb. thug who wants to steal her purse. . .

    Why do I carry? Because I can! Simple, really. ;-)

    I copied this off one of my other threads ( If this isn`t a reason to carry I don`t know what is)

    Yesterday morning when walking from the garage to work,(4am) I ran into a very uneasy situation. Off course there was not anybody else around either…
    I guy came up to and asked for a Cigarette. I told him I did not have any, so then he asked for a chew, I again told him I did not have any. He then got right in my face and said I was the man and I did not belong on his street and that I had to give him something…I just kept walking and told him to get lost. He then said he should shank my ass right here. but continued to follow me. I work in a government building so I cannot carry my gun with me into work,(if there was a way I would, I carry everywhere else.) so needless to say I was a little nervous about the situation. I did have my knife open in my pocket just in case I needed it. This is the first time this has happened to me in the past 6 years. I often run into homeless early in the morning but most of them seem to be harmless

    Just out of curiosity I would like to know how you would of handled this situation????

    I appreciate everyone’s suggestions. I do feel that I am able to pretty much take care of myself in this type of situation…I have had some training in self-defense, but am getting a bit older now and it’s good to have an equalizer with me. This is the first time I had difficulty getting a person to back down. I was nervous about trying to use my cell phone (thinking he might want my cell phone, and try to take it) I did have my flash light with me , I did not think about using it. I thought to myself if I just pretty much ignore him he would realize that I was not going to give him anything. I also thought about going back to the truck (where my guns are), but I really did not want him to know where my truck was. I think I will get a little bit of pepper spray to carry with me from now on. I think that drugs may have been involved…When he did leave he just kept talking to himself as if he were still talking to me. What sucks is the fact that we cannot carry our firearms to work. I feel that is you have a permit you should be able to carry anywhere...after all that`s the reason I got my permit.
    It seems like whenever you run into this type of situation, it is a gun free zone (go figure) Of course that’s why most of these situations happen in gun free zones, because the bad guys know that the honest law abiding citizen will be gun free.

    Again thank-you for all your suggestions....

    Buggyout summed it up pretty good, even though my experiences have not been as intense as his. When you work with evil on a day to day basis, it changes your perspective on things.

    We do share one problem, even though I go to work in uniform, I must leave my weapon at home!

    I carry because I grew up on a farm and having a weapon was a way of life. Became a deputy sheriff for a few years and that only served to reinforce the feeling of comfort having access to a weapon provides. I REFUSE to become a statistic to some gun toteing lunatic in a movie theater. Plenty of comfort even at the thought of my car breaking down and needing to walk somewhere. It does present a minor problem at times as we live next to a state that will throw you in prison for breathing on a firearm. I just have to remember to take it out of my purse when I go to the airport there. No other reason then the airport to go to the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts.

    Like the picture in the OP- I carry because I'm a stay-home dad and I hear the news.
    Any parent who didn't take any such steps is irresponsible, IMO.

    Anyone who thinks "that sort of thing doesn't happen here" needs to buy the local LE officer a beer or lunch and spend 30 minutes listening as they talk about their week working in their "quiet" town.

    I carry because I have at least ten people who told me that they were going to kill me and three who would on sight. Sounds crazy right?

    Be a cop for 10 years and come back and talk to me.
