    Default Squatters

I guess you could call this a Scenario. The SHTF big time. You bugged out to your BOL. Survived the initial shock wave, and you feel it is safe to go back to your home. Just for arguments sake, let's say you were gone for three months.

When you arrive your home has been taken over by a Zombie horde. What do you do?

It begs the first question we all ask ourselves: Do you bug in or bug out? If you bug out what do you do when you return to squatters?

This certainly factors into my plans to bug in. I do not want to come back and find somebody living in my house; using my furniture; sleeping in my bed;and now I have to prove that it is rightfully mine. What have they stolen or used that is gone, and again I have to prove I had it in the first place.

Has anybody else thought about this? Has anyone been through this before? Does anyone know if FEMA or some other agency intervenes in these situations?

We also plan to bug in if possible and have thought a little about this. Not sure about the FEMA part but...If we're forced to bug out we're A-taking everything we need anyway so the zombies can have what's left and, other than shelter, shouldn't be much to hold them there and B-not sure that we'd be real quick about returning, after all, things were bad enough to force us out...
Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Ummmmmm I have been scoping out an abandoned house that I thought of using for a bol. we can't afford to buy it yet, but it is perfect. Isolated, near the river, surrounded by woods and game.

Sort of the opposite of your thread. I might be bugging in to someone else's house. But in this case, the house is empty and has been for years. The corporation that owns the ranch that surrounds it has no use for it, but wont sell it without an aweful lot of money. If things truly go down the toilet, I doubt any of them would be coming to Florida to use the old place.

Of course if I did go there and the owners showed up, I would vacate. or ask them to share. it is a pretty big house.

I'm more than sure that weak people in mind and body will quickly succumb in a world changing event. There will be plenty of houses. There are more than 30% that constitute elderly. They are much more inclined to own homes. The flip side, is there are a large percent of 'working poor" who, i believe would be our largest problem.

Don't forget the non working poor. I put them at the top of the problem list.
You don't have to be perfect, but you better be smart!!!

My plans are laid in stone. Once we live to go to our BOL we will never return. We will make a life for ourselves in the farm and never look back.

Back on the original post... if I came back I'd set up and observe for a few days to get a jist of "Who" is living there and how. If it's a family or similar and look like maybe decent types taking advantage of a good place during a bad situation. I might go in and address them up front and tell them your the owner and your back. As for proving it heck you probably still have your drivers license showing the address.

Depending on how that intro goes, from there I would need to decide if they might have value or not and possibly be worth keeping around. If not I'd firmly explain that I will be giving them 24 hrs to vacate and take with them only what is theirs. If they had used up supplies or keys items I might demand some type of "repayment". I would be firm on the timing and that they do not hang around the area. Then I'd go find somewhere to watch from again. Should they not leave then things would escalate to ugly.

If the squatters appeared to be criminal type element, might instead try to make a night time visit leaving a note telling them I'm the owner, I'm back and they need to leave immediately or face repercussions. Can put a few items in the note to prove you have intimate knowledge of the house. If they choose to ignore, then might have to make another night time visit to include kicking in the front door and doing a night time raid and removing them by force or by carrying their body out the door.

    Zombies really?

If I came home and there were people in my house my reaction would be the same no matter what the situation. They would come down with a serious case of get the f%&k out.

In the same boat as longhunter. If it's real zombies, I start shooting quickly before the try to eat me. LOL. If it's regular squatters and it's been that bad a SHTF that I left my home, I don't expect any Gov. help and either the squatters fly, or the squatters die. It is my home, they are armed intruders and I am within my legal rights once they act "threatening". I know this sound extreme to some, but extreme times will call for extreme measures and they will proably kill you for your resources if they get the chance.

    I appreciate everybody's input.

Survivorman - Zombies - just a term for the displaced hordes who may wander in. Not literal.

I would take the same approach as CountryGuy. I would approach peacefully, and try to reason. If that didn't work then a more violent approach would be required. Dale, you are correct in assuming there will be no Government help. At least not in any reasonable amount of time. You can only rely on yourself, and your group.
