Default Cost today of Preppers items Jul 2012

I went today to three stores I buy items that I feel we will need in the coming hard times.

    1. BIG LOTS: Spices for cooking. Bland bulk foods can be cooked and made to taste different just by adding a few spices to the soup or what ever is cooking.

I purchase individual 6 oz spice jars at Big Lots at least once a year. Last year the prices per jar was 65 cents - today it is $1.00. I also purchase things like duck tape 3"x40' last year was 2.50 - today it was $4.50. Braided 3/8" x 100' braided rope was $7.45 last year - today $9.00.

    2. WAL MART: Some bulk items I order through Wal Mart including sugar last year $11.00 per 25 lbs - today 13.94. We all know about peanut butter prices up 40 percent. Last item was hungry man pancake mix 25 lbs bag was sold at $15.00 - today was up to $22.57. There are many others.

    3. HOME DEPOT: Last store was to get nails and deck/wall board screws. Here is something we all need on a continuous basis and will run out within 6 months no matter how we try to save from wasting them. They are just too useful around the home and farm.

    Last year 1 lbs 3" common nail cost $2.33 - today it was $4.45. Screws deck 4" 1 lbs was $4.59 - now $7.89. Roofing nails 1 1/2" 1 lbs was $2.33 now $5.65.

My point is all the items we need to use and store away for survival is going to cost you over 35 percent more then the same items last year!

What do you think the cost will be in January 2013 or 2014?

Rich this is why I am so frustrated with my work. No raise of any kind in over 6 years, and we are certainly not overpaid to start with. SIGH...........
I do love my job though. It satisfies something inside me that wants to "serve".

Anyway, in a different thread it was asked before "how do you thing tshtf will happen?"
My answer is that it is happening real slow. We are headed toward critical mass in the budget. Good post to bring the urgency home.

Food prices have really startled me. I can definitely see a difference from last year. Also, A decade ago. I agree with ya, Bro, We are swirling the toilet bowl in slow motion.

The government has refused to give true inflation figures since the Clinton administation because they know it is bad news, and it makes them look worse. Rich, you have proven it with a few staple items. Inflation is far worse than anybody realizes.

Stocking up especially on non-perishable items is good for prepping, and a good hedge against inflation.

I was talking with a broker today about cotton seed but he handles all farm grains anyway he told me that corn prices were up 35% in the past 10 days and to look for them to go up 3 times that much in the coming month that anything that has corn or wheat in it would be triple in price in the next 3 months because of the drought . I know corn is burnt up around here and soybeans are behind on growth maybe a month . Cotton seed is bringing $225 a tone and last year this time it was bringing $150 He thinks we can get $350 in another month and that means that milk prices will be going up as the main use for cotton seed is feeding dairy cows .

I totally agree with all of you. But all of us buy in bulk or when onsale. We try to lessen the pain of buying as much as we can, I don't remember the the last time I a good steak. Remember we are not the ones 9 meals from anarchy. Maybe only rice and beans but it's better than nothing.

Just think, with all of these prices rising now, the real inflation from the trillions spent by the government haven't even kicked in yet.
