I don't necessarily dislike Bear Grylls. I just take what he does with a grain of salt, and most of it I ignore.

First, I would put him in the category of a world-class athlete. He is in phenomenal physical shape. This by itself allows him to do things the rest of us wouldn't even consider. If you are not in that kind of shape you would kill yourself trying it.

Second, he has a camera crew with him. How real can the situation be when you are "trying to survive" with somebody filming you?

Third, and I blame the Producers for this, finding the most disgusting things to eat in every episode is just unnecessary. It is grotesque, and done for shock value. He always, very conveniently, comes upon some game in every episode. Something Les Stroud doesn't do.

He does give some good info, and I try to learn, but I would rather see an everyday Joe trying to get through these situations using brains and wits.

A recent comment on Dave Canterbury was about his not having the real background that he claims. Bear is to me worse.
His show used to make a big deal out of the fact that he had trained with the French Foreign Legion. It implied that he served with them, and showed clips of him in uniform. The truth is he did a mini-series where much like his survival show he ran around in the sand with them during their version of boot camp. there too he had a film crew and medical staff to "care for him".

i have seen him jump off of a cliff into a pool of unknown depth, drop into an icy cleft without knowing if he would find a way back out or not, and do other things that would not be worth the risk if you didnt have a medical crew and sat phone within feet. He says it is to show what you would do if you HAD to, but in truth some things you wouldn't do ALONE no matter what. I don't care for his show.

Have to agree with diesel and coyotee here. It's suprising that nobody ( that I've heard of) has gotten killed "trying this at home" most of the stupid stuff he does on TV. IMHO he's a joke.

So when the time comes to take a risk will you ? or will you lay down ? If he pushes himself to take risks or try something that he may be able to use later at least he is trying....if anyone thinks SHTF won't be nothing but risks then you need to look in the mirror and wake up.....and far as Diesel throwing out the Moron name...you can say what you want but I would like to see you follow him and keep up if your life depended on it.....I'm betting on Bear...everytime...

I know who I am. And I have done more and survived more REAL peril than the actor we are discussing has dreamed of, and have done it in some of the most remote places in this country. So when I say that for some of what he does "the risk outweighs the benefit" for a SOLO survivor, it isn't as someone sitting in a dark room dreaming of the what-if's.
I simply feel that he takes chances because he has medical back-up and a sat phone handy. If he was truly alone, some of what he does wouldn't be worth the risk vs the benefit involved.

I had a good conversation with one of the television survival "experts" about some of his content once and he said that giving information brought attention to the topic, and was good to do even if it was bad information. (paraphrase)

I disagree. I feel that Bad advice is worse than no advice. My honest opinion.

So if you are faced with a situation that includes risk will you take risk or lay down ? if you are alone and the short route will save you one less night in the cold, heat or wet will the risk be worth it ? if the risk is worth the gain for him to try something that you would not...who is anyone to say he is wrong ? it's his risk or assessment of it that he will base his decision on. You , me or whoever may say the risk is too great due to physical ability, knowledge or the will to make it happen. He has very good physical abilities and is very confident in those abilities, content in any TV survival show has always been good/bad. I like Cody Lundin, but I also think barefoot is stupid...It all comes down to being in the situation and doing what your mind tells you is necessary to survive...and having the skills and confidence to pull it off....

You're just looking to argue. There is zero logic behind your statements, nor did I say when face with a situation that includes risk.. I said taking uneeded risks is assinine especially when alone in the wild in survival mode u don't jump off shit, go into places you don't know if you can get out of etc and if you think you do then good luck LMAO. You've taken up enough of my time

LOL....so if you say it's too much risk everyone should feel same way ? you and others made the he does not know what he is doing or he's an idiot statements...not me....all I was trying to say is that your idea of risk and his idea of risk is based on skill and experience....if your skill and abilities will not allow to do the things he does don't trash him because he is willing to take the risk.....so as admin if you don't like other opinions different than yours you just say...You've taken up enough of my time ? LMAO.....

Ummm it's my SKILL and ability that tell me that it is a bad idea. Not that I am incapable, but that I am too wise. Just sayin.

Question? Is this where we are at as men and women who practice being prepared? Television shows? Equipment with the name of the star of the show on it?

Like I said, once 2012 passes without a sneeze gone wrong, I'm hoping 80% of people "Prepping" will go out with it...... and for God's sake, take "Zombies" with them. No offense to anyone who believes.
