I've trapped critters with those Havahart traps... they work really well. The only problem is if you have a lot of them. That just gets annoying trapping one and going to release it then having to do the same with the whole family. But I can confirm that the traps do work-- and I baited them with apple slices.

If this doesn't work I would definitely call your local pest control guy.

    Good luck!

In most states it's illeagle to relocate wildlife and studies show that 95% of relocated animals either die or return to there original site. You are out of luck on repellents for groundhogs/woodchucks, there are no effective ones. You can either buy a gas cartridge or run a hose from a vehicle exhaust, and the animal dies quickly and painlessly from CO and CO2 poisoning. Then fill in the holes. Good Luck!

For me, I'd just shoot em. Ground hogs are rising fast to #1 at spreading rabies in the Kansas City area. Have personally killed 2 with rabies just this year. They are not worth the risk. JMO

Just curious why harvesting is not an option? If you did trap it what are you going to do with it? Now you have to handle it (at least the cage) without hurting it or anyone else. Seems like a lot of trouble for what reward?

If it was my garden the little bugger was raiding, I'd kill it in a heartbeat. Those plants belong to you, for your benefit, not the varmint's. It's not going away on it's own, ever. It has a buffet, at your loss. Pull out the .22 and take care of business.

It is not really me that does not want to hurt it, is my wife; she works at a veterinarian clinic and just does not like to see animals hurt, unless it is necessary

Chef, I am with you concerning my wife's soft heartedness. But we have a firm deal. Her squirrels and rabbits are off limits running around the yard, but when they start tearing up my plants, then their protection is exempted.

I have also had to get my wife to come to terms with eating them if need be. She hates the idea, but is "making peace" with it.
Sounds like a good chance for you to use this situation to have that similar conversation with the misses.

    Good Luck!
