    Default .22 shells for barter

I know alot of people say not to arm your enemies, however .22 ammo will be a perfect medium of exchange. It is very cheap now to buy extra bricks. If you have prepared your defensive plan well a box of .22s will not throw the enemy the upper hand.

Interesting. It will also depend on who is asking to trade, and how great your need is.
I have some folks in town that I would probably give my ammo to if they had nothing to trade.
Arming them is the same as myself because they will step in to help me in need, and I trust them.
But there are other folks that I wouldn't trade with. Period.

    Agree with you Myakka.

Also, just cause there are 50 in a box doesn't mean that's what you have to trade someone. Maybe it's only 10 rds for something unless like you said you know who it is and that maybe it's for hunting. Initially I think things like 22 will be very abundant and therefore have less value for trading. As time goes on however it will become more limited and therefore law of supply and demand will drive up it's value.

I think you need to have different barter items for different time periods into an event. Initially things like food, water and basics along with vices like tobacco, candy and alcohol will have high values and will maintain. But as an event goes on other things will gain higher value, say tools or manual kitchen things like hand mixer or grain mill.

    Agreed CountryGuy,

I think everyone should try to find one SKILL to get really good at for barter, and if you succeed at it, then work on a second in case the folks with the medicine you need for a family member already have a beekeeper/ blacksmith/ seamstress or whatever your primary skill is.

SKills in barter are awesome because the more you use them up, the better you get, and the more value the skill has.

I know I should not say this, and don't take me to be mean, but today me and a few other people were discussing the fires and SHTF. My ex-boyfriend of 8 years ago said to his now girlfriend, "we'll ask Caroline if we can come to her house, I know she is prepared, she is always that way." I replied, "Okay, if you ask I'll probably let you (as he does have skills)." Then this one big guy looked me up and down and then said; "I'll just come to your house and take your supplies" I said "if you come take my supplies and run with them, have at it, but when you invite all your friends to come eat what you stole remember this- it will be guess work as to which food you and your friends eat that have been poisoned... just for people like you." He just stared at me while the others laughed at him. I went on to tell him that "I have 2 pet peeves; one is a thief and the other is a liar, they are one in the same. A thief will always live a lie, and a liar will always steal your trust. Steal my supply and trust what you will find." Okay... you can kick me to the curb now.

Caroline: Good for you. I hate a bully. Now you have at least planted the seed of doubt. Should the situation arise I would hope you would plant the seed of lead right in his mellon head.

I'm still not bartering any ammo unless I am truly desparate, and have nothing else to barter.

This is something that was on my mind today. 22lr is the most common and cheapest round out there. Everyone that has half a mind to prep is going to be stocked up on 22lr already. Most everyone that uses guns owns at least 1 22lr firearm. I am not so sure that 22lr will be worth a whole lot due to the fact that there is already a good supply out there. I maybe wrong though and I will continue to stock up on 22lr anyway. I think I have over 10'000 rds of standard loads and 1,000 rds of Stingers, shorts and birdshot combined.
I think 12 guage is another very good option as the way I see things is our guns will be used to hunt far more than fighting off cannibals and gangsters, at least where I am.

    P.S.
How many rounds of 22lr would you go through in a month if you were feeding a family of 4 by hunting?
My best guess is you would use around 50 rounds in a month. This means a brick of 500 would last 10 months maybe even a year. This gives me an idea for a new thread!

Myakka you are so right that everyone should have a skill, and I really do wish I had one. Somehow I don't think drinking beer, eating potato chips, and watching television will get me very far when TSHTF. They are skills, but not very useful skills. That said I am working on improving.

When I think of bartering I look at things a little differently. My wife has always been a saver. In today's lingo you could probably call her a hoarder. For most of my married life this has been a real thorn in my side. Not being able to get my car in the garage; not being able to move in my basement; having rooms that you just close the door and forget about. Now I look at it like a gold mine. Her famous line for saving was always "some day I will need it." Well now may be "some day".

We have more inventory that a Super Wal Mart. I have literally restocked people's houses after a divorce or other tragedy, and it doesn't even make a dent. You can't tell anything was taken. I am quite sure that Jimmy Hoffa could be buried in my basement. No one would ever know. That is what I will barter from!!! The basemant that everybody laughs at hysterically when they see it, just became Fort Knox.

I bet if many others looked at what they have saved over the years you will find a similar windfall. Keep your ammo, and open your basement, attic, garage you will find plenty for barter, and charity. Don't forget charity. Maybe the government can't tell, but we can tell the difference between the truly needy, and the truly lazy.
