Default 7 Reasons Americans Are So Complacent About Our Country's Impending Bankruptcy

Good discussion with good links to expanded info.

    1) They're being misled by people with bad motives
    2) They think it's far off in the future
    3) Crisis fatigue is rampant
    4) It's too confusing to comprehend
    5) It's painful to stop and easy to continue
    6) We still seem to be a rich country
    7) They don't see how it will affect them

I was trying to come up with which are most prevalent and could not. All are extremely valid. I did keep coming back to numbers 2, 3, and 4. And 5. And 7. BAH!

I think I would add Apathy to this list. So many people think there is no difference between the parties, and their vote doesn't mean anything, so they don't even bother to vote. Many of these probably only get their news from the lame stream media which is horribly biased.

Many years ago William Simon, who was Secretary of the Treasury under Gerald Ford, wrote a book titled "A Time for Truth". In it he said ' No politician ever got elected by promising less.' Sad but true. We are at that critical point where politicians will have to be elected by promising less.

I think denial could be #1 on the list. People I know have told me, "Oh, that can never happen here. "They" wouldn't let it!" Or, "No, the country is too strong for that to happen. "They" will come up with something." I like this one - "I'll worry about it when and if it ever happens".

Denial, complacency, and narrow focus. It isn't painful enough yet. Like trying to wake up someone on cold medicine, most folks ignore the signs around them, pay $4.00 a gallon for gas for a few weeks, then get all happy when it drops back to $3.20. It isn't that they see what's going on and choose to ignore it. They literally don't see it. Too many day to day chores and worries to notice the big picture. Kids are sick, letter from the school about a meeting with the teacher, parts recall on our truck, rate increase on power bill, on and on and on. So it gets very difficult to pick your head up and look at NATIONAL trends, worldwide finances, etc....

I would add, lack of personal responsibility. I think they view it like everybody views personal bankruptcy, no big deal, we'll "file bankruptcy" and the creditors will just have to suffer the loss, no skin off our noses.

My daughter was saying something along the same lines . She is a manager of a local dollar general store she was telling me that a name brand laundry detergent ( I am going to make up the numbers just because I cant remember them exactly but you will get the idea) was selling its large box of detergent 100 loads per box for $10.00 they changed the printing on the box to say 85 loads with 15% more free for 100 loads for $10.50 in 5-6 weeks it went to a smaller box with 85 loads for $10.50 . No one seemed to notice that the price went up and the # of loads went down . She told me it is happening with almost everything they sell .

I think morally bankrupt should added. I went to the mall last week and I couldn't believe how many young teenagers had their pants around their knees, piercing all over their face, tattoos, girls with not much more than a bra on and the language. I have to wonder do these kids have parents that have allowed them to walk out of the house like this. We are in a world of trouble if these are our future leaders.

I am always amazed at this trend on the clothing thing. FYI (if anyone on here didn't know)
The trend of wearing your pants down started in prison, and to my understanding was an outward sign that you were interested in a "date" with you as the female.
This habit of wearing your pants low proceeded to be seen by visitors to the prison, and looked tough/ cool/ ganster, and got continued outside by rappers etc.

I worked in the school system for a while, and actually explained this to middle school boys. MAN YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN HOW FAST THEY PULLED UP THEIR PANTS!!!!
I also made sure I mentioned it in front of their friends. (I kept it clean, but made clear what it meant)
I still laugh when I see it. Then I cry a little.

One kid I tried to work with had an older brother in prison for car theft. I tried to talk to "D" about getting out of trouble, setting goals, and he told me bluntly that his brother was the only one in the family that had ever had anything (a nice car.... turned out to be stolen)
And was his hero. Guess where "D" is now? Prison. Wonder which little kid in the family is looking at him now in awe.
