myakka62, just for your amusement, If you have a buttload of money, want to be politically correct and impress all your liberal friends. You can go on a paintball or tranqualizer hunt for dangerous game in Africa. LOL. I kid you not. Thousands of $$$$$ and all you get are a few photos. Thought this would make your day.

    ROTFLMAO!!!!!!

That was AWESOME Dale! Let's do it!!!!

Thanks for chiming in on this guys. I don't get catch and release, but it is from a poor person's perspective of not throwing away food.

But it has been fun reading the replies.

Fly fishing is an art form to some......the cast...presentation.....the fight.....it's not about eating the fish....it's about everything up to that point....I have no problem with catch and release myself....I live in an area that has catch and release for streams ( trout ) and lakes ( largemouth bass ) do some fish die after being caught ? yes.....how many deer die every year from bullets and arrows that hunter does not find ? it is what it is......it has merits and drawbacks like everything else in life.....

I take the boat out and fish at least 4 times a month. My entire family enjoys eating fish so I keep all that I can legally keep. A friend of mine lives much closer to the lake and goes at least 4 times a week. He is the only one in his family that eats fish so he releases 90% of what he catches unless I can talk him into saving some for us. Fishing is what he really enjoys. I never thought of it but I guess it all depends on how much you need. Taking more than you need is a waste. Releasing back gives the fish a chance to re-spawn and keep populations up. As for stress I don't know how long a Bass memory lasts but a goldfish is about 3 seconds. lol

I practice catch and release of every fish I catch excluding trash fish. They get released too, but in a less gentle manner.

I trout fish a fair amount and I am not much for catching my "limit" and heading home. I am there to enjoy myself and the way I enjoy myself is catching trout, enjoying the solitude and terrain, observing nature, identifying wild flowers and other wild plants, and photography.

There is a knack to releasing fish unharmed. It takes some practice and the only way to get the experience is to catch and release a lot of fish.

I am not very interested in catching fish to eat in general although a load of brim (crappie) fileted certainly makes for a great meal. But trout, I generally when possible release them. I hope to catch them again or let someone else catch them.

I'm far from a serious angler, having said that, I don't think about fish or many other lower vertabrae animals as having human qualities. Do they learn from their mistakes? If so why can you catch the same one over and over? Sure I'd hate to have a hook set in my lip, but do they feel pain in the same way?

I quess I just don't see the objection.

I don't ponder on it too much. I just like to fish. I don't always like or want to clean fish, especially at the end of the day when I'm tired, hot, maybe sandy, hungry, and just want a good hot shower, A/C, and the sofa. ;-)

As psycho as this sounds, its actually being done in africa now and called "green hunting" with tranq darts and so I've read with paintballs (limited) http://www.southafrica.info/travel/w...reenhuntin.htm Maybe you guys that live out west might want to consider a new way to make money off of this. Personally, I have no desire to shoot a lion, leopard or elephant in the but with nothing but a tranq dart. LOL.

I have three small ponds. I practice with hand lines trot lines and float lines I make a trap from time to time just for practice. I only keep the very smallest for food. The breeders go back.

Oh, it is possible to catch every catfish in a pond with a 2 L pop bottle three-foot a string and a hook baited with a small perch. I've done it when I was going to drain a pond
