Default Just Ordered a New Pig Gun Marlin 1895G 45-70

Tough to find marlins in my area so had to order it. Marlin 1895G 45-70. Also ordered Bullet Mold, bullet sizer, reloading dies, checks, and brass. Got the Ranch Dog 350 grain flat point gas check mold. If I need more lead than that I will get the Handi-Rifle out chambered in 500 S/W with the hand cast 440 grain.

What size hogs are you going for? Something in the elephant size? That is a lot of gun and even more a lot of bullet. You had better be aiming at the head, other wise the round will go right through the body.

Going for any hog that runs in front of me. I just like the big bore rifles. Guess I dont like to be undergunned. 350 grain is on the small side for a cast 45-70 round. They can get quite hefty. Head shots shoulder shots it dosent matter to me. Thats why I choose a bullet with wide Meplat (flat point of bullet) The wider the better. Pointed solid bullets will separate the flesh and zip through without transferring alot of energy to animal unless it buffalo size. Bullets with a large Meplat will transfer alot of energy to the animal because the flat point causing resistance and pushing through tissue. With the big slower rounds its neat to hear that flat point just sledge hammer'em. I will use this gun for deer to.

Very nice. I would like to have one too. I have my Golden 39A .22 and my 336 30-30 that I really enjoy. That one would be the icing on the cake.

Now that is some serious firepower. Those guns will make meat for the table, if you can find it after the impact of those rounds.

Hogs are tough, agressive and smart. I'd much rather have too much gun than too little. I've seen a hog hit solidly 6 times with a .44 mag and still injure the shooter. I used to have a .450 Marlin for such occasions. The .45/70 is an excellent choice IMHO.

I had to look all over the place to get mine. I was told the handi in 500 S/W is no longer in production. Couple diff. big dealers told me this. Ended up getin it off of gungenie.com it got overnighted outo arizonia to an FFL dealer where I payed the CASH diff. The Handi 45-70 is still in production. 500S/W ammo cost is through the roof. The only reason I own it is because I cast my own bullets and reload. Im not going to pay 30+ for a box of 20 when I can cast and reload a box of 50 for 5.00+/-
