Smile How to Make Survival Antibiotics.

Thought this might interest some folks.

    Making Survival Antibiotics.

Didyou know that penicillin can be grown outside of a lab? This mold-basedantibiotic can be grown as a science project using a slice of bread. Pleasenote that these instructions should be used for experimentation only; whenthere is a medical need for penicillin, it should be obtained through a doctor.Making penicillin does require some scientific equipment, and it is veryimportant to keep the area sterile while you are growing penicillin. Here’s howto make penicillin:
    Supplies:
    Sliceof bread or citrus peel
    750ml Erlenmeyer flask
    Media (see Step 4)
    1000ml (1 L) graduated cylinder
    Several clean milk bottles

    1. Preparea penicillium culture.Expose a slice of bread or a citrus peel to a 70 degree Fahrenheit environment.A blue-green mold should develop.
    2. Sterilizethe equipment. Place the flask in the oven at 315degrees Fahrenheit for one hour, or sterilize in a pressure cooker for at least15 minutes. Wash the milk bottles.
    3. Fill the Erlenmeyer flask. Cut the bread or citrus peel into small pieces and fillthe flask. Allow to incubate in the dark at 70 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 days. After this incubation period, the flask can be stored in the refrigerator forno more than 10-14 days.
    4. Preparethe media. Dissolve the following ingredients, in theorder listed, into 500ml of cold tap water: 44.0 grams Lactose Monohydrate,25.0 grams cornstarch, 3.0 grams sodium nitrate, 0.25 grams magnesium sulfate,0.50 grams potassium phosphate mono, 2.75 grams glucose monohydrate, 0.044grams zinc sulfate, 0.044 grams manganese sulfate. Then add enough cold sterilewater to make one liter. Use hydrochloric acid to adjust the pH to between 5.0and 5.5.
    5. Fillthe bottles with media.Fill the milk bottles with this media. Use only enough so that when the bottleis placed in its side, the media does not reach the plug.
    6. Addthe penicillin spores.First sterilize the bottles of media in a pressure cooker or in the stove, asyou did the Erlenmeyer flask. When they have cooled, add approximately onetablespoon of the spores from the bread or citrus peel.
    7. Incubatethe bottles. Allow the bottles to rest undisturbed ontheir sides at 70 degrees Fahrenheit for 7 days. If the culture has worked toproduce penicillin, it will be in the liquid portion of the media followingthis incubation period. Finally, filter the media and refrigerate immediately. If you must use it, although this should be avoided, use as soon as possible.
Thepenicillin made from this experiment should not be used unless it is a survivalsituation. It is possible for other, toxic molds to grow along with thepenicillin, even if you know what you are doing. It is also possible for moldinhibitors to grow, stopping the growth of the penicillin spores.

This is knowledge our ancestors didn't have and a reason so many died from simple infections. Good stuff to know for after SHTF. What do you think?

Thanks for posting, it is good info to have. Though I would personnally be leary of attempting it unless it's a last resort. It's very true that antibiotics were a game changer, right up through WW1 most battlefield deaths were from infection. It's also true though that many of our ancestors died from moldy food or food made with moldy ingredients such as bread from moldy flour. I'll stick with the stockpiles as long as I can, although when they're past date it's a crap shoot too...
Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

This is a great way to make it again keep it simple and very clean if you want a pure source. This could become the next gold standard for trade!

Although it is nice to know we could grow our own penicillian, I don't see it as practical to try and get all those chemicals and a ph meter which costs close to $200 for a cheap one, easier to stock up on the antibotics themselves but thank you, was interesting read. I vacuum pack my antibotics and store them in the fridge to help the aging process per a pharmacist's recommendation.

Geez Dale, I have a tiny little bit of lab experience from interning with a medical examiner, and I thought this sounds kinda complicated to do today, not even in SHTF. I think someone who has a full village, like RICH might have the resources, (He might even have a medical person in his group) but for me it is too daunting to take on.

I am brushing up on my herbal knowledge though. I used to be pretty sharp in that area while managing a couple health food stores. So for me, it was a neat read, but not something I will be doing.

Thanks though, it was neat to see the how-to

myakka62, I remembered having to do this in high school (few moons ago) for what I thought at the time was a insane biology teacher. I'm glad now that he did. I think (won't swear to it) that you can purchase premade media with a long shelf life. I'll try to research this.
Uses the same skills needed for making many primary or detonation explosives. Without the worry of blowing of your hands. LOL

Isnt it funny how we're shaped by the folks we experience in life?
For you the science teacher has you able to go all "Nutty professer", and it sounds way complicated to me,
but I spent a few years with a group that made their own herbal meds, and I feel pretty comfortable rubbing home-made poultices into whatever part of me hurts thanks to those hippies and what they taught me.

I agree, we never know until it's experienced, how people and events will affect us. A 2nd grade teacher, high school biology teacher, dad's war stories, John Wayne movies and a drill instructor. All points where my life changed and at the time I did't even realize it. From these I'm confident in my ability to cook dinner, make penicillian, create explosives or make war on the enemy in his own land. Funny old world.

Note: From what research I've completed so far it appears that you can use standard nutrient broth for media, and it comes in a storable dry mix. I'll keep looking though.
