We are planning on buying a new car or used, I was thinking of an older used hummer any ideas if this would be a good bug out vehicle? It's not the best on gas but the older hummers are built to last.

How about one of these? You can keep going even after you run out of gas.

    Oooops, try this one.

Good idea and cheap, My stepdaught's husband made her bike into a gasoline bike like that. I'll have to get a couple of these made so I can put on back of hummer. I would get a trailor though and carry can gas.

I don't know if we are talking about a H1 or H2. The H1 is a take off of the military version and can be diesel powered and a great vehicle. The H2 is a glorified GM surburban, nice rig but as you say poor fuel milage and a lot of electronics to deal with. My thoughts are keep it simple, few or no electronics and good fuel economy.

Toyota Land crusiers are a good choice, Jeep Cherokees and Land Rovers are also worth looking at. Diesel power would be first choice. Hope this helps.

thanks, I see others looking at land crusiers and jeep cherokees etc. but thought the mpg's on these were just as bad. On the hummer i was thinking of looking into the H1, I think I heard they were also made of medal, but not sure.

I don't think it gets any better then the H1 and if it has a AM diesel in it a bonus. They are a little on the high end price wise but a well built vehicle. Some of them had kelvar doors with a steel body.
There was one on E-bay a while back that was a military version, had a machine gun turret on top and all the radio gear inside and side arms. All were deactivated but it was pretty inpressive. Bet if you came up behind someone in that they would think twice about cutting you off.

I have been waiting a long time to get my hands on a first generation military HMMWV. I figured they would have them up for sale by now like the Jeeps after WWII.

If it is like anything else the government does they will probably dump them in the ocean on the way back to the states.

How many hum-vees did the government leave behind in Iraq? I am lusting for a military hum-vee myself.

The military Humvee does not meet D.O.T. standards and cannot be sold directly to the public and used on the hiway. As I understand a few of them slip through the cracks and are resold but with a lot of red tape involved. I guess that is why they are pricey on e-bay.
