Connibear #5 traps are lightweight and reliable commercial traps, but learning animal behavior and tracking is essential to consistent enough success that you can rely on enough meat and fur to get your family by. Whenever I can I talk to the old timers who've been trapping longer than I've been alive. Many are no longer trapping but moving in to taxidermy or retired due to age. These folks are usually eager to share. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the input. I agree on the learning. I've been trapping 41 years and learned from my grandpa and dad. Liked it enough that after the military I got my degree in Wildlife Biology and went to work for the fed gov as a professional trapper/hunter/wildlife biologist for years. When I couldn't stand the politics anymore I became a park ranger. I think it's a skill every prepper should learn. Just my 2 cents.

Respectively, I said know the laws. In certain survival or SHTF scenarios, it may be necessary to go outside the law in order to survive.

Trapping laws can be very specific and involve special licenses and seasons and even certain types of traps. Be aware, not afraid to practice and remember eat what you kill! I'm not saying be an outlaw trapper!

She is 13 and should not play with connebears or jaw traps yet.

Constructing a trapping board is a great way to practice setting traps in the comfort of home! Trapping stuffed animals or rubber chickens can provide a source of education and entertainment!

Didn't intend to imply that you were recommending anyone be a criminal but your post did say to forget the law. Iv'e trapped in 20+ states and will agree that many of the current trapping laws are a pain in the butt. People should know that in a survival situation there is no law that prevents anyone from doing whatever they have to too survive. Most states have laws on the books addressing this situation and allowing these actions. In a true survival situation, no on (especially me) is going to care about any law on the books. And, if they do, let them prove it.

I agree with learning and practicing primitive methods. But, anyone doing so illeagely needs to be aware of the consiquences if they are caught. I'm just sayin. Be aware of what your doing and the opsec that it requires.

Good link SG! There's another good trapping link somewhere but I forget it.

When I said forget the laws, I meant it! What I did mean was to practice legally in a safe and secure manner to build knowledge and skills, untill she gets in the deep cold woods with a long trap line, where ya need to be following the quirky trapping laws. We're in the same book, just different page!

id have to say buy good modern traps primitive traps work well with modern trapping but i would not rely on primitive trapping alone
ex when i set a 110 or 220 conibear trap on a game trail i do a side trail set and up trail and down trail i set ither twitch up or yoke out traps on the trail so it increases my odds
    good luck
