I agree with Zeke. Your neighbors are more likely to listen to you because they trust you. Your neighbors will surprise you inyour time of need. Kindness will be repaid with kindness.

I like the idea of a community garden. It will show you who is willing to work. As well as give you more time to evaluate their character face to face. Good Luck!

Big Guy, I believe you have the right idea. Not only are you creating good relations with your neighbors, but training them with out their knowledge. Great idea.

Kudos! I think helping your neighbors learn to prepare is wonderful and if you have a side benefit then thats OK too.

Big Guy - your heart is a lot bigger than mine. You are definitely doing the right thing, and hopefully, your neighbors will be more like you, and follow your lead with kindness: a HUGE plus if you have an indigent wife at home who needs help.

Unfortunately, the people next door to me think their property is hallowed ground. If you step on their blessed grass they are out screaming. They even threaten subcontractors who are coming to work at other peoples' houses about parking in front of their shrine. I haven't spoken to them for twenty years. In a SHTF scenario I will shoot him first. I wish I could be more like you.
