When we talk about SHTF I assume it is a dire emergency. And if it is, then what would you do to survive? Yes this is how the farmer "feeds" his family. But taking a cow will not ruin his operation. I see a big difference in taking one of a hundred cows compared to taking a farm families only cow. And if he saw me, and defended his property, he would be completely justified. But it is not something I would do lightly. The scenario I imagine where this would be necessary is one where the farmer has much more on his plate than chasing down all his cattle scattered over 600 or more acres.
I don't feel comfortable talking about what I am willing to do to keep my family from starving!

There are a lot of things I would consider that I would never do otherwise.

    I understand perfectly.
One thing I should have explained also, I know everyone in my area very well. There are no less than 3 cattle ranchers that I could probably pick up the phone and have a cow delivered tomorrow. So when I think of helping myself to a cow, and then making good with the rancher, it isn't exactly from the perspective of going to a stranger's yard and helping myself. If there is still telephone communication post shtf I could call and ask, but as I said, if the events unfold and it is necessary, I think I could take one, and work it out with the owner later. Truthfully, he might tell me not to worry about it and let me work it off on his ranch. I have an area of expertise that I often end up helping the big landowners on their property anyway.
I didn't mean to offend with my input on the thread, I was simply exploring the idea.

On a side note, what would you do with a whole dead cow anyway? That is a heck of a lot of meat.

P.S. No offense taken and none intended. Eveything is OK. Just stating an opinion.

Wouldnt that be a great problem post shtf? Too much food? In my case we have a generator and hundreds of gallons of fuel. So our freezers will work at least till we can smoke meat and dry over a rack. I also expect to have a large group relying on me

IMO anyone with large herds of livestock WTSHTF are going to be one of the biggest targets after all the supermarkets and corner stores have been cleaned out. People with families, or just people in general that are starving are not going to give a rats ass who owns what, they're going to take what they want over your dead body if need be. Unfortunately or fortunately (whatever your stance is) mother nature is going to cull our herd by the millions in a matter of weeks or months.

Unfortunately most ranchers are not going to have the manpower necessary to do battle with the literally thousands of people wanting what they have. In the end they're going to loose and probably use most of their precious ammo in the process, it's going to be an absolutely futile endeavor.

WTSHTF there are going to be a lot of herd animals roaming all over the place especially if the people who usually care for them are dead and gone, I know it sounds like I'm being callous I prefer calling it being a realist. Anyone with large herds of livestock are setting themselves up to be targets, I for one don't want to be using my ammo stock pile defending animals. Now let me just say one thing in my defense here, I'm not dissing, belittling, or making fun of anyone here I'm just pointing out that we're not going to be the only ones trying to survive a post SHTF world.

Around here there are places where you can see open pasture with cattle obvious from the highway. But there are still backwoods places where the cattle are less noticable. Depends on the nature of the collapse, and whether the rancher has the time and desire to round them up, but I think these would be places that "wild" herds would be found at some point.
