Is there an icon, or something that "pops" up if someone responds to a post that you started

Not that I know of, but I just hit the "new posts" button upper left when I come on this site. then I scan for labels I am interested in.

I do the same thing, there is one place you can look though and thats in your subscribed threads once you post a reply to a thread you are subscribed I don't know how to turn it off but if I want to look back I can by going there.

Ok, go to the upper right of your browser and hit the "settings" button
Then on the lower left click on "general settings"
There is an option to be notified by email of activity on threads that you subscribe to or have started.

Who knew? Thanks for asking, it made me dig around a little!
I think I will still just use the "new posts" button, but atleast we know there are options
