I'm sure using a road flare would work in an emergency, but that is like killing an ant with a canon. IMHO I would rather keep the flare for its intended purpose.

I use butane lighters that friends affectionately call the blow torch. I get them in cigar stores, and they are pricey, but they have never failed, they are guaranteed for life, they refill without any problems. The ones I have seen in sporting goods stores are cheap, and never refill. It is not my only source to start a fire, but it is a little more manageable than a road flare.

The trioxane tablets look like a good idea. I have an Army Surplus close to me, so I will look for them. Thanks for the post.

We make fire starters out of dryer lint, pencil shavings, and paraffin wax
We melt the wax in a double boiler, add dryer lint and pencil shavings. Let it cool some
Roll it into little balls, throw your balls into a plastic bag, and then put them into your bug out bag and you’re ready to start your next fire…
Dip some stick matches into the wax also, that way you always have some water proof matches with you.

been carrying these for years. cut about 3" off the end with the SCRATCHY THING u use to scrape with. carry 3-4 in the space 1 full size.

my kit has several odd things
    1. 3 flare stubs as above
    2. life boat matches
    3. cut 1" wafers form fire logs. burn for about 20-30 minutes after flare goes out. not much for cooking but great foe starting a fire.
    4. trioxane tabs. old heating c-rats when no c-4 was around.
    5. shoe goo the stuff u fix shoes with . get cs of it at shoe repair.cpme in small 2oz tubes.
    several other standard items.

tape the life boats to my sheath knife, with duct tape.other side of sheath has sealed pill bottle with scraps of fire log and stell wool.

may starve but not gonna freeze to death.

Keep flares in the car but my matches are covered with clear fingernail polish. Is that a bad idea?

Mtnlioness: Have you tried to light one? I'm not sure how flammable finger nail polish is, but I wouldn't want to have an accident in an emergency situation.
