I was taught to use a piece of carpet to protect the line, when running it over a stone face; like repelling down a cliff face. Bridgeport Mountain Warfare School Instructor Course(s) USMC 1981 and again 1984.

you can do that, it's very old school and what I started off doing, but it creates friction on the rope depending on the carpet, and can sway off the rope, the menthod I posted if far superior, and also applies to anchors around trees, rocks and buches, which carpet doesn't lol

I did high angle rescue with the search & rescue team for quite a few years and we found that using old fire hose as edge protectors works very well just cut the hose to any length you need it and slip it over the rope at the edge of the building, cliff, ETC to hold it in place we used 8 MM cord and secured it with a prussic knot to the main line.

Like survivalguy I also use old firehose to protect my anchor ropes. I have used this method for over 20 years and have never had a problem. Fortunately for me we have quite a few FF's in my extended family so I get all my used hose for free.

Hey thats a great idea about anchor ropes. I'm a retired F.F. & live in a small town. I asked one of the Lts. @ our local department for a piece of rope for hiking etc. He gave me a 25' piece of nice kermantle rope, which I wasn't expecting. The next time they want a donation for their rescue squad or anything else, I will be donating.

I use a 3ft piece of flexable soft tubing, the kind used for protecting underground electrical wiring, it's light and easy to carry and also can be used as a syphon or draining water

Where is a good place to buy cotton rope?
