First of all I wouldn't wait - not for government, not for news. That's why we're preppers. We have everything ready so we can be out the door in 5 minutes. So when others are listening to the news, then frantically packing up their dishes, my family has been on the road. As preppers we have at least 3 locations and 3 different routes to each of them. We're not stopping for gas cause we keep our tanks full & extra gas cans.

What Chicago needs to worry about is the New Madrid fault line.
It's DC that needs to prep for your scenario. There is no way out of DC except the highways. No side streets that, no alternate routes. Now who do you think declares Martial Law? and calls the National Guard..yes in DC, the 1 and only, the Big O.

This is too fake to call a real scenario, what is OP really about, contingency for ALLLLLL the terrible scenarios one could throw out there? What about the underlying fault line no body knows about, earthquake caused by nuclear explosions...

This one got a little over the top. I had a couple of questions when I read the first scenario. I am making the assumption that this young couple had a car, and could get to family in Wisconsin in two hours.

First hint of trouble from the first announcement would be Get Out Of Dodge. I wouldn't have waited any longer than it took to pack the car to get my pregnant wife out of harm's way. It sounds like you are new to the area; don't know many folks, new at the job no matter how much you like it. Get someplace safe as fast as you can. Going to family, even better.

This was a hard scenario to stop - stop making sweeping changes, like involving large crowds of people in full riot.

The best thing to do is: What you and your family decides to do. If you are new to the area and new to the job, you may think twice before bolting away from the area. But having family and a wife in this condition you need to sit down and discuss it.

Making a snap decision could be the worst thing you have ever done. Take the 5 minutes to calmly talk about your options before you decide on which one is the best for you and your family.
