without lab tests to determine gram neg or pos and what antibiotics the organism has gotten adapted to antibiotics are a crap shoot. it can be very difficult to determine what an organism is just by the symptoms the patient is exibiting. A broad spectrum antibiotic is a good choice but be careful. You must get the dosages right, too much is better than too little.

One of the problems when stockpiling medicines is not only what type or how much but what is the shelf life of the medicines

Antibiotics have a shelf life that is months. There is not way to prolong the shelf life, they just start loosing their strength, and finely become toxic if left long enough.

RICHFL you are correct. The shelf life of antibiotics is important to note. You have to know what infection you have and the correct antibiotic to treat it. If anyone is ordering antibiotics please make sure that you know what their used to treat and the side effects. It's also important to know interactions with other over the counter drugs, RX, dairy and foods. They can be deadlier as they age, and what you were trying to treat in the first place. Tetracycline is not one to store.

http://doomandbloom.net has an internet radio program with new podcasts on Saturdays. I think they are associated with the Florida Survival Network Region 6, because Dr.Bones is out of Broward county, and I have seen links on their site.

That's why everyone should have a drug book in their library...yes broad spectrum would be the wisest choice since growing in a petrie dish and have a microscope on hand may be far fetched I would be afraid of people really stocking up on antibiotics without a little knowledge. Microbiology was a very scary class (I kind of wanted to be that girl in the bubble) and I wouldn't want some random person without the knowledge taking a pill here or there and then developing more resistant strains.

I enjoyed reading this thread. I did not realize that the antibodic had such a short shelf life. Antibiotics for human use is longer. I'm a R.N. and have a stock pile of medications but I'm having a hard time finding anywhere on the internet where you can get medication without a prescripon and being able to trust the site.
