    M1A

Oh, btw... I thought the longest documented sniper kill was by a Canadian sniper in Afghanistan using a Barrett .50 cal? Was it a .338, instead?

It was a .338 round that took the guy out. One problem with the .338 is cost per round. Do you have unlimited funds? If so go for it. otherwise stick with the .308 which is 7.62x51 mm NATO and is very common to find including Wal Mart!

The M1A1 is the civilian M-14 which I love and did qualified on the range in the USMC in boot camp. But it has a lot of parts and since this is a survival forum you want something that very effective.

So go for the Rem 700. You can get it modified to the same level as the M21 or M40 sniper rifles the USMC still uses.

There were 2 record breaking shots to come out of Afghanistan. The most recent was a British sniper with a L115a3 in .338 lapua magnum. The previous was set by a Canadian sniper with a McMillan tac-50 .50 bmg.

I really like the M1A. I'm guessing 308 is the caliber of choice for you? Excellent round very available

Yes the 308 is what I want as far as cal. Goes its just the rifle im leaning towards the rem 700 parts are pentiful and so are upgrades. But the m1a is one of my favorite rifles. So im stuck.

I think I would go with the AR 10 . I looked at one quit a bit but decided on a Russian Dragknov in 7.62x 54R . The reasons I went with tis instead of the AR 10 is that the gun is a bit cheaper and the ammo is also a lot cheaper also I can get steel core ammo for this gun that has great penetration on a lot of things

I have an Armalite AR-10, and a Remington 700 30.06. I love the AR-10 for the quick follow up shot as well plus ammo is available just about everywhere. Though I still use my 30.06 most of the time for deer hunting. I've very rarely had to take more than one shot so a quick follow up shot has never been a problem. Even though it is a bolt action I'm very proficient with it, so I can chamber a round very quickly and remain on target. It's just something about the 30.06, call it nostalgia, or just the fact that I've used it for so long it feels like an old friend with me out in the woods. I also have my old Winchester lever action .30-.30 which was the first deer gun I bought when I was a kid. I don't use it much anymore but there are days when I break it out and fire a few rounds through it a the range, plus it gives me a reason to give it a good cleaning before putting it back in the Gun safe.

I kind of agree with Johnny...338 Lapua...but I love my 30-06! Good luck with whatever you choose. These guys have a lot of good points!

The average kill shot distance in Wisconsin during gun deer season is 30 yards. I have always wondered why everyone is so keen on big calibre rifles when a good 30-30 or 308 is more than enough for self-defense and putting food on the table.

This group has some excellent acquired real world knowledge, so, I ask this question; Why recommend a rifle more suited for mountain hunting to someone to be using it in the woodlands of Kentucky? Thanks.
If it was man made it can be man re-made.
