I bought and am happy with the Zero Water filter system. It takes alot of the nastys out of the water.
If it comes a time after SHTF I would definatly suggest boiling the water to kill bacteria and then filter it.
If you get one and need filters after the initial one that comes with the product, contact the company directly and you can buy a 16 pack of filters for about $10 each and there will be no shipping charge.
I believe that the filters go for about $14 each out of the store and you have to go to the store to get them.
The website is www. zerowater.com and the phone # 800-503-2939

I have seen these water bottles with a built in filter. They claim to filter out 99.9% of cryptospiridium and girardia. If these filters leave 1 out of a 1,000 of these little germs that is enough to make you sick. Seems like water filters are for taste only.

This might be a good place to start before going and buying a bunch of expensive water treatment tech. It covers the basics of finding safe treated water, gathering raw water, various treatment methods, storage, and conservation. It's a long read but worth it. I printed this article so I can stash it away for future reference. Definitely worth a read.

Any thoughts, or anyone with first hand use of a "straw" type water filter such as the Frontier Water Filter Straw? I pack light, so I thought maybe this would be a good option. I recently got a couple because they are inexpensive and one will fit in my small pack without taking up much room or adding hardly any weight.

To get the answer to that and a whole lot more, see MAGS thread http://xcolony.com/x/showthread.php?...-worth-a-read).

He reports only the the stuff he actually uses and is a vast repository of great gear knowledge.
