Yep, .458 and .50 Beowolf fit on the 5.56 lower. I have 5.56 and 7.62x39, both piston uppers.

I know it said AR-15 as the topic but I have an Armalite AR-10, I prefer the .308 round for its knockdown power and ammo is readily available. As a bonus I can also use it for hunting. My next AR will be a AR-15 chambered in a 6.8 SPC which is the equivalent of a .270 which I can also use for hunting and has better knockdown power than a 5.56/.223

I have a 6920 with a complete set of replacement parts. I have a 5.45 build, too, but I'm thinking of selling the upper and putting together another 5.56 gun on the lower. Its a good gun, but I rarely shoot it because the ammo is cheaper but corrosive and I'm a slacker. Seems to gunk up when shooting high round counts, too.

Ya, I started with a 5.56 NATO, but I quickly discovered that 6.8 x 43 is THE way to go! Yes, it IS equivalent to a .270, but you should keep under 130 grains with your bullet choice so that your muzzle velocity stays over 2550 with standard pressure loads. That way you can STILL drop a whitetail where it stands at 300+ yards (with slightly hotter loads).

Best place to shop for 6.8 btw is AR15performance.com. THey have the MOST knowledgable gunsmith (Harrison Beene) and arguably the best quality and MOST accurate barrels & uppers made!

Call me a BRF, but if I could only own 1 more rifle, I'd be jonesing for a .338 Lapua on an AR10 frame. That would be my really long range sniper rig.

    Hi all, new guy here.

I"ve got a S&W M&P AR15, that I've really slicked up with all kinds of add-on's, that I think really improved the over all rifle. That being said I was looking at purchasing a 6.8 upper until I found out that while you can use your regular AR mags with the 6.8 but, you can't load that many rounds in them because they swell to the point of not being able to be loaded into the magwell of the AR. I was then introduced to the ACC 300 Blackout, a 30 cal. round that will do a one for one bullet swap in the AR Mag. The first round introduced was the 220 grain bullet for subsonic purposes. Now there is a lighter bullet I believe it's a 127 grain bullet that will scream and is a much more consistant manstopper than the 5.56. While I have lots of 5.56 ammo around, I'm beginning to collect more and more of the blackout ammo...just so I'll have a heavier hitting round to go with the 5.56.

I try to keep to the always available calibers. I have a 223 in a 20 in heavy barrel, and a dedicated 22LR in a 16 in light barrel for cheep practice. My favorite is the DPMS format 308 with a 24 in Bull barrel. I say Format because I live in California and was told DPMS is on the "ban" list, but I could get the same thing from Fulton Armory. Got to play the goverment's games.

.458 on an AR 15 lower? No. Avking mentioned the .458 upper on an AR 10 lower. DPMS> http://www.dpmsinc.com/Long-Range-Rifles_ep_74-1.html doesn't refer to their .308 as an AR 10 so I'm guessing Armalite or Knight's Armament as I believe both (which by now may be one and the same) make an AR 10.

Sure you can chamber a .308 cal (7.62mm) bullet in an upper that will fit on an AR15 lower. BUT the catch is, it uses a shortened case, only 39mm total length! See this link for more details on this profile. The shortened round shares a common malady with its revised red curtain counterpart, the AK47, that is, the net energy of the round is underpowered according to DOD testing. Same holds true for the 300 BLK format. See this link for more details!
