Kerosene? I remember when you could buy that at gas stations when I was a kid, but I'll bet I haven't seen it in 40 years.

Really? I saw it where I bought diesel today. Real common in this area.
JUST CURIOUS? PRUNES ARE DEHYDRATED PLUMS. SO WHERE DOES PRUNE JUICE COME FROM?

I've used charcoal lighter in a pinch (after Hurricane Rita)--keep the flame low. Yes there is some smell.

How close is kerosene to Coleman fuel? Could you operate a Coleman lantern or camp stove on Kerosene? We cooked a lot of meals on our Coleman stove after Hurricane Ike. If so, it might be good to have a 5 gallon can (or several) on hand.
Also, in a bind, is it possible to use kerosene in a gasoline generator, either straight or mixed with gasoline in order to stretch your supply of gas?
Or will this result in one of Rusty's "explosive moments"?
Note to self: figure out where to buy kerosene down here nowadays.

OK, I checked with Home Depot since they sell kerosene space heaters. They sell Kerosene for over 10 bucks a gallon!
There has to be someplace that sells it cheaper than this.
We just don't use this stuff much down here.

    Default Wick Preparation Really Helps

But the 'ultra pure' kerosene lamp oil at Tractor Supply was $4.99/quart on clearance!! Thats $20/gallon, on clearance!! Is ultra pure really necessary? I'm going to experiment with baby oil, mineral oil, etc. Man, it ainta gonna be cheap to light by lamp light....

    Lo~
Ultra Pure is really not necessary. If you first trim the fuzz from the top of the wick, and make some small 45 degree cuts to the corners of the wick, it really eliminates smoke. Additionally it helps produce a wider, brighter and controllable flame pattern that you don't have to constantly adjust. Make sure you have given the wick time to soak up the lamp oil before lighting it. I personally like and use lamps with wider heavier oil reservoirs at the base; not as easy to tip as some of the fancier taller ones with reservoirs dangerously too high. Please keep a quality ABC type fire extinguisher nearby and read up on how to use them properly for maximum effectiveness. Also make sure the batteries are changed on all smoke detectors twice a year. I change mine out during Daylight Savings. Good Luck.

You can also use olive oil in some lamps, Leman's store has the proper jars for this also. you can check out there site for what you need and I havn't looked yet, but you might be able to get the proper jars cheaper, but it will show you what you need
