Greetings from Ruthless. I live on the Divide in the Gold Country of California (where gold was discovered in 1848). I know some, want to know more, about everything. I am a master gardener & food preserver. I don't mind sharing knowledge with serious persons. I know I still have alot to learn though. Your membership list shows some quite interesting names. I would like to talk to persons with my similar background. I am an RN, Burn/ER experience for years & those with military service. My service time was 'short' but efficient. Is anyone interested?

Has anyone heard of the book by kathy Clark, dinner is in the jar. this is great idea. Create a 90 day suppley of easily prepared dinners using food storage ingredients in mason jars or mylar bags for emergencies & convenience on busy days. You have premixed dinners ready to prepair right at your fingertips. when stored with oxygen obsorbers they last a long time. Many of the recipes require the addition of something else like a can of chopped tomatoes or a can of chicken, but all the dry ingrediants are already measured out, such as spices, noodles, beans etc. Here is one: Chili---this is a 1 quart and 1 pint dinner in a jar:
Quart Jar---3 cups dried red or kidney beans, in a seasoning baggie put 2 tablespoons of cornstarch; In the pint jar: 3 T chili powder, 1/2 cup plus 2 T dried minced onions, 1 T dried oregano, 2 t salt, 1/2 t Italian seasoning, 1/4 t black pepper, 1/2 Cup tomato powder and 1/2 cup dried chopped bell peppers. Add on at the time you make it 2-14 oz. cans diced tomatoes and a pint of cooked ground beef.
Directions: Remove oxygen absorbor. soak beans with 8 cups water overnight. Rinse. Place beans in soup pot with 10 cups water. Simmer 1 & 1/2 hours uncovered. Add tomatoes , beef and season from pint jar.Simmer 30 mins more. Mix content of baggie from the quart ja with some cold water and add to chili. simmer until thick.
this is something you wouldn't have to measure out ingredents to make stuff, it's already done ahead of time just dump it from the jars and you are done. There are a lot of recipes in the book that are good: Biscuits and sausage gravy, shepherd's pie, even mexican pizza and reg. pizza. some of this stuff you can make in the morning by just grabbing a jar of the ingredents, put it on and heat up for later. Sounds like another good way to stock different types of food.
they're web site is DinnerIsInTheJar.com

A lot of you guys have asked me about my microfilter. So, here we go -
There are a few things that I want to work and work every time I pull it out. I don't want to mess with crazy tubes, or sub-standard filters. I also want something small enough where it won't weigh me down in the field. Well, here it is;

IMAG0367.jpg

The bottom line is you can be cheap with a lot of things. Me personally, I won't scrimp again on fulfilling the basics. FIVE out of five Buggy starz!

Okay! A lot of you guys know, I am in the process of lightning my pack, possibly for an AT through hike. I've purchased a lot of high speed hiking gear in the last few months. So, I'm about done and start loading my favorite pack:
I removed my tent, hunters axe, sleeping bag and pad and about five other BOB items. I add hammock, high speed water filter, hiking stove, poncho liner. Guess what? It all fit in, barely. HOWEVER, I hadn't added food and clothing. No room.

WHAT THE HECK???

Okay, So I load my "heavy" pack. It all fits in and MORE! Now I have plenty of room for food and clothing.

In reading many of the posts here, several members have lost water services for some period of time. Fortunately, I have never had that problem, so I have no experience with it. My question is how does your home plumbing work, and how is that affected by city services?

When you have no water will your toilets still flush if you put water in the tank? Will your sinks, and tubs still drain? For how long? Is there a point where these things will not work because electric pumping stations are not working?

Would like to hear from people who know. Thanks! confused:

Alright, I'm back and I've made upgrades! I'm still keeping the cloak and I added some new outdoors clothes but those are outside of the kit.

I wanted to call this my "final evolution" but I know that just will never truly happen. I have the kit to where I want it, and have been carrying it around trying to figure out more about it on day hikes. Knowing how I function in the woods, this is an excessive dayhike kit and I feel would be an easy 3-day to week-long kit for myself.

I have increased the space available inside my kit through use of a compression sack. I had solved the issue of carrying water on the pack in the last evolution but this time, I have room to carry food directly on the pack itself. Right now it weighs about 5lbs without water and food and I hardly even know it's on my hips while hiking. It is very comfortable and has no "hot spots" on it while I have been wearing it.

With the addition of the cloak, I can carry a mess kit and more food if I really want to extend the kits capabilities

Here's the latest kit

The paracord belt with a high carbon steel flint striker

The weave

The hand forged high carbon steel belt buckle/awl/flint striker

On the left hip, I have a compass pouch and my compass

Right hip I have my Iisakki puukko and leuku hand made in Finland

The canteens are stainless steel that I picked up from the second hand store.

In the front pouch I have, from left to right: first aid kit, head lamp, emergency signal whistle Fox40 (which I scavenged), and my fire kit with lighter/matches/ferro rod

In the main compartment from left to right: water filter, platypus, cordage, toilet paper, topo map, and on the bottom is my compression sack with my USGI poncho that has many uses.

Close-up of the aquamira frontier pro water filter

The water filter is a little difficult to manually draw water through, but I can hook it up to the platypus and with the platypus I can put manual pressure on the bladder and quickly filter water through the filter. It also allows me to refill my other water bottles and gives me an extra 1 liter storage capacity of water.

Now all I have to do is field test it for the intended goal of 1 week. This has been delayed because I'm supposed to be moving... it'll happy soon though! I have another month off coming up and will get out for sure!
