I've been on the search for a hiking stick, not that I need one since I have two, but one is completely set up for long hikes(has a ruler, flashlight, compass, paracord rock sling, under the paracord hand grip, a razor blade, fish hooks, fish string, saw, and zip ties) and as for the other stick I found it and made it more of a fancy one(custom leather handle, carved initials, and about 10 coats to make it look fancy) so I'm after something I can use everyday cause I have a bad back, and something that can be beaten and hold up..

I was thinking, bare with me now, same ballpark but diff league, what about fiberglass? Cold steel makes those couple of toys out of polypropylene, and they ain't cheep but take a beating, so I was thinking at lowes/HD you can get replacement handles for rakes or shovels yet there wood, but, they sell a complete setup with fiberglass handles for $10? Just chop the shovel head off put a rubber foot on the bottom, trim the rubber hand grip and wrap it with paracord for a handle? That's got to make it really light, hollow, but a solid feel? Whatcha think, I'm kinda interested on this, besides that lets see what you guys have for hiking,, JR

Here's my two,

New top three Portable water Filtering Systems for 2013

Water, Water Everywhere and not a drop to drink... Flooding often fouls municipal water systems. Earthquakes damage pipes and infrastructure causing water contamination. Power outages due to storms leave people without the electricity required to move water to their taps. Be it flooding, hurricane, tornado, earthquake or National Emergency, it is wise for everyone - every family - to have an alternative source of safe drinking water. Affordable and easy to use with discounted pricing available to groups and organizations, The Outback™ is the perfect emergency water source for you and your family.

FIRST CHOICE: Sawyer 3-Way Inline Water Filter

Average cost: $49.95

Review: The 3-Way Inline Water Filter is a solid top choice due to its rapid flow rate, incredible ease of use, and ability to produce insanely filtered water. Sawyer is notorious for top-notch filters. This one, if used correctly, offers exceptional protection from bacteria and protozoa since these organisms can't physically pass through the filter pores. Sawyer also makes a purifier that can remove viruses if that is a possible issue on your trip. When the filter is in place, you can simply fill up your bladder and immediately start drinking. If your water source contains large particles or sediments, it's a good idea to pre-filter your water through a cloth, micro-bag, or even a coffee filter before running it through the filter to avoid damage. The system also comes with a faucet attachment so you can filter tap water while traveling. To top it all off, you get a one million gallon guarantee, which means if you properly clean and care for your filter, it can last a lifetime.

SECOND CHOICE: Seychelle Radiological Drinking Straw

Price: $ 22.95 / Each

1. Product Specs: The filter removes the four basic zones of contamination: Aesthetic (Chlorine, taste and odor), Chemicals (from Industry and Agriculture), Dissolved Solids (heavy metals such as lead, mercury, Chromium 6) and up to 99% of Radiological Contaminants such as Gross Beta, Radon 222, Radium 226, Plutonium, Uranium, Strontium, Cesium 137 and Radioactive Iodine 131. The filter is designed with a hard shell that is formed to exact or 2 micron absolute porosity. The filter is impregnated with various proprietary media that have the ability to remove, absorb, adsorb, chemically bond and chelate different contaminants as they pass through the tortuous path designed in the filter. It is the ideal filter system for those concerned about radiological contamination that might exist in drinking water supplies!

2. Key Features:

a. Removes up to 99.99% of contaminants and pollutants commonly found in drinking water sources using its proprietary Ionic Adsorption Micron Filtration System.

b. Removes up to 99.99% of all major nuclear contaminants.

c. The new radiological straw filter produces up to 25 gallons of great-tasting water!

d. Designed to be used anywhere disaster strikes; essential for emergencies, earthquakes, floods, fires and nuclear catastrophes!

e. Protects your family with clean, safe drinking water in the event of a radiological emergency!

f. Proven tested technology by Independent laboratories using EPA/ANSI protocols and tested to NSF Standards 42 and 53 by Broward Testing Laboratory.

g. Removes up to 90% of fluoride.

h. BPA free!

i. Filters are replaceable and recyclable.

THIRD CHOICE: The Outback™ Water Purification System

Price: $159.00

1. Review: The Outback™ is a gravity-powered™ system that purifies water from almost any fresh or moving water source. Rugged and durable, it was designed to be used when municipal systems are compromised or are not available. The Outback's™ design has been proven effective by rescue, relief and religious organizations in Latin America, Africa and Asia and throughout the world. It is currently used by such organizations as the U.S. Government, Red Cross, Youth Mission, Boy Scouts of America, Mormon Church (LDS Church), NW HardRain Expeditions and a multitude of Local Fire Departments.

a. Simple enough for a child to operate. Just pour water into the upper chamber through The Outback's™ pre-filter net to remove large particles of sediment and debris. The Outback™ delivers 6 gallons of purified water per hour*. FEMA, Red Cross and other agencies recommend an emergency supply of at least 1 gallon of potable water per person per day. Most purification systems produce only enough water for an individual. The Outback™ will easily purify water for an entire family for the duration of an emergency.

2. Function:

a. Purification: To protect from virus add either a small amount of standard household bleach or common iodine tablets to the upper chamber (source water). This additive will devitalize virus and bacteria (the additive will be removed from your drinking water in later stages of filtration).

b. Secondary Filtration: Next the water flows through the 0.5 micron filter located in the upper chamber. This filter removes particles 0.5 microns or greater in size, including the removal of cysts such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium.

c. Final Filtration: The Outback's™ final removal stage is a bacteriostatic multi-media filter, located in the lower chamber. This filter contains mixed media which will effectively remove or reduce 70+ contaminants, including chlorine, bad tastes and odors, iodine/iodide, organics, pesticides insecticides and herbicides.

d. Outback Purification Kit - complete with filters: (Filter package includes Pre-Filter Net, 2 Sediment Pre-Filters and 1 Mixed Media Filtration Cartridge - enough to purify 1800 gallons of water.) Sediment Prefilter Capacity 600-900 gallons based upon source water condition. Replace every 6 months or when flow slows below operational level.

e. This portable water purification system destroys harmful bacteria and viruses, including E.coli, Cholera, Hepatitis and Polio. It's 0.5 micron filter removes cysts to levels exceeding EPA standards - achieving greater than 4 log (99.99%) reduction rate as tested by NSF (National Sanitation Foundation). Mixed Media Cartridge Capacity 1800 gallons or 12 months

f. Just pour the raw or questionable water through the pre-filter net and into the upper pail or optional gathering pail. (The Source water container). Pre-filter net removes debris and large sediment particles.

g. Addition of 1 Tablespoon of regular household bleach* or 1 iodine tablet** destroys bacteria and virus that may be present in the water. (Follow instructions for specific contact times which may vary based upon water quality.) Sediment Pre-filter removes contaminants down to 0.5 microns in size, including the removal of cysts.

h. Multimedia cartridge removes many industrial and agricultural contaminants as well as chlorine, iodine and bad tastes and odors.

i. Flow Rate:	1/10th gallon/minute or 6 gallons/hour

First, hello all. It's been a while since I have been on.

I have completed my solar generator that i have been talking about for about a year.

Here is my parts list;

12v 55ah "Hover Round" battery

5w sunforce solar panel

7 amp solar charge controller

425 watt power inverter

quick connectors with in line fuse (7.5)

I was able to operate a small lamp with a 60w incondecent bulb and a box fan.
I attempted to use a blender but I blew the 7.5 fuse.

This is supposed to be for emergency use only, just incase the power goes out we can run light and a fan to keep a little cool.

My problem is, I think the 5w solar panel is too small to fully charge the battery. I am considering going to a 15w panel so I can better maintain a fully charged battery.

I am open to suggestions as to how I can improve my system. Sorry, no pics yet.

Anyone see this?

U.S. Military Grants Itself the Power to Police the Streets!!
...

Anyone see this?

U.S. Military Grants Itself the Power to Police the Streets!!

http://www.policymic.com/articles/42...ce-the-streets

According to an article published on Tuesday in the Long Island Press, the Pentagon has "has quietly granted itself the ability to police the streets without obtaining prior local or state consent, upending a precedent that has been in place for more than two centuries." The story, by Jed Morey, refers to recent changes made by the Department of Defense to a U.S. Code titled "Defense Support of Civilian Law Enforcement Agencies." The changes, Morey argues, are the latest in what he calls the "militarization of domestic law enforcement" and further blur the lines between police SWAT teams and the military.

These changes, which have attracted media little attention, bring with them the worrying potential for greater involvement by the U.S. military in domestic affairs.

The changes clarify the rule for the involvement of military forces in civilian law enforcement and establishes "DoD policy, assigns responsibilities, and provides procedures for DoD support to Federal, State, tribal, and local civilian law enforcement agencies, including responses to civil disturbances within the United States." According to Morey, the most worrying part of the recent changes is the inclusion of vague-sounding language which permits temporary military intervention in the event of "civil disturbances":

"Federal military commanders have the authority, in extraordinary emergency circumstances where prior authorization by the President is impossible and duly constituted local authorities are unable to control the situation, to engage temporarily in activities that are necessary to quell large-scale, unexpected civil disturbances because:

(1) Such activities are necessary to prevent significant loss of life or wanton destruction of property and are necessary to restore governmental function and public order; or

(2) Duly constituted Federal, State, or local authorities are unable or decline to provide adequate protection for Federal property or Federal governmental functions."

According to Morey, the military is currently "prohibited from intervening in domestic affairs except where provided under Article IV of the Constitution in cases of domestic violence that threaten the government of a state or the application of federal law." Morey labels the recent changes as a "game-changer," given that they undermine existing limits to military intervention in domestic affairs. Bruce Afran, a civil liberties attorney and constitutional law professor at Rutgers University, is concerned about the lack of definition contained in the rule, including what constitutes "wanton destruction," or under what circumstances prior authorization of the President would be considered "impossible." "These phrases don’t have any legal meaning," he say. "It’s no different than the emergency powers clause in the Weimar constitution [of the German Reich]. It's a grant of emergency power to the military to rule over parts of the country at their own discretion."

Civil disturbances are defined in the regulation as "Group acts of violence and disorder prejudicial to public law and order." While Morey quotes an unnamed defense official who claims that the authorization has existed for over 100 years and just has not been exercised before, legal experts are concerned by the changes.

Afran argues that the rule is "a wanton power grab by the military. It's quite shocking actually," he continues, "because it violates the long-standing presumption that the military is under civilian control." Furthermore, he argues that the definition of civil disturbances is broad and vague enough that "all of the Vietnam protests would meet this description. We saw Kent State. This would legalize Kent State." Eric Freedman, a constitutional law professor from Hofstra University, also labelled the rule "an unauthorized power grab."

Morey notes that although the outcomes of previous domestic military interventions in the U.S. have varied:

"...the protocol by which the president works cooperatively with state governments has remained the same. The president is only allowed to deploy troops to a state upon request of its governor. Even then, the military — specifically the National Guard — is there to provide support for local law enforcement and is prohibited from engaging in any activities that are outside of this scope, such as the power to arrest."

Freedman points out that the "The Department of Defense does not have the authority to grant itself by regulation any more authority than Congress has granted it by statute." Meanwhile, Morey argues that this is exactly what is has just done, and that it is not the first time the Department has attempted to expand its domestic authority.

So is this a unilateral power grab by the Pentagon that has potentially worrying implications for the future, or is it simply a necessary precaution in case of a legitimate emergency that domestic law enforcement is unable to handle?
