I start by making a template on cardboard, I make hash marks at the top for a size guide. Long lines are inch short marks are half inch.[IMG][/IMG]

Next I do every thing with straight lines to start then draw my blade shape and handle shapes.[IMG][/IMG]

Then I cut out the template and transfer it to the metal, I always draw my lines bigger than my template. [IMG][/IMG]

On this knife I cut it out of a piece of 3x5 square tubing, usually I have flat stock and don't use the torch.

After I rough cut out the blade I retrace the template. And start grinding till the line is gone.

Some cold rolled some 1095. Just depends on what types of scraps I can get my hands on.

That is pretty cool. I am going to try that. I usually by blanks (premade blades without handles) and make my own handles from bone or antler but, I am definitely going to try this now. Thanks!

Old two man saws, buzz saw blades, disc blades, and others will give you better stock and you won't waste your time on metal that won't hold up to use and will sharpen well plus hold an edge. Most square tube, sheet metel haven't sufficient carbon to make good tools of any kind. Hardend metals will have to be annealed firts to prevent brittleness and injury to users. Need to be rehardend for use after you have made your item.
